Innovation in Titanium Miniplates: Dissertation by Drg. Bramasto Purbo Sejati at FKG UGM

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), has once again produced a doctoral graduate through the dissertation defense of drg. Bramasto Purbo Sejati, Sp.BMM.Subsp.T.M.T.M.J(K). The research conducted by Drg. Bramasto—affectionately known as drg. Baban—focused on titanium miniplates, small metal plates widely used in oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures, particularly for facial fracture fixation.

Clinical Challenges Highlighted: Biofilm and Infection Risk

In his study, drg. Baban examined how the surface of titanium miniplates can serve as an attachment site for bacteria, allowing the formation of biofilms, which may lead to postoperative infections. Additionally, factors such as the angle of placement, applied pressure, and plate geometry were found to influence surface damage and bacterial adhesion.

These findings underscore that technical precision in miniplate installation plays a crucial role in the success of patient treatment.

The Role of Proteins in Bacterial Adhesion

The research also identified the significant role of proteins in facilitating bacterial attachment to metal surfaces. This insight highlights the need for a multidisciplinary approach, integrating biology, dentistry, and materials engineering to reduce clinical complications.

Innovation and Future Directions

Beyond addressing clinical challenges, the dissertation presents several future innovations:

  • Development of patient-specific implants using 3D printing, tailored to individual anatomical needs.
  • Establishment of new clinical protocolsto minimize infection risk and improve treatment outcomes.
  • Strengthening collaboration between clinicians and researchersto ensure dental material research aligns with real clinical applications.

This dissertation serves as an important milestone in advancing dental science, particularly within oral and maxillofacial surgery. With its innovative scientific approach, the research not only enriches academic knowledge but also contributes to improving healthcare services in Indonesia.
