FKG UGM Tests Special Toothbrush for Children with Down Syndrome at SLB Negeri Kota Bontang

Bontang, 2 September 2024 – SLB Negeri Kota Bontang was the site of an innovative trial for a prototype toothbrush specially designed for children with Down Syndrome. This program, involving 14 children, parents, teachers, and researchers from the Doctoral Program in Dental Medicine (IKG) at FKG UGM, aims to improve their dental health and overall quality of life.

The toothbrush, produced using 3D printing technology, is designed to facilitate oral hygiene for children with Down Syndrome. "This prototype toothbrush is designed to provide a better solution for children with Down Syndrome, who often require customized oral care tools. We hope this product can ease their dental care routine and enhance their quality of life," said Rieza Zulfahmi T., one of the researchers.

The trial used a cross-over design, where children alternated between using the special toothbrush and a regular toothbrush for a week, with a one-week washout period in between. A non-SLS toothpaste was also used to minimize risks for children who may struggle with rinsing. Evaluations included dental cleanliness, gum health, and hand contact area during brushing.

The program also involved PT KMI as a partner, providing supporting materials such as educational leaflets, monitoring calendars, and brushing timers. Parents were trained in proper brushing techniques. One parent shared, "I sent a video of my child brushing, and it turns out he finds this toothbrush much easier to use than a regular one."

This initiative not only focuses on testing the tool's functionality but also emphasizes education to support the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being.
