FKG UGM Enhances Students' Skills Through Intraoral Examination Practicum

Yogyakarta, 28 October 2024 – Third-semester students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), have successfully completed the Skills Lab Practicum on Intraoral Examination, which took place from 22-28 October 2024, at the Dental Unit Lab, 3rd Floor North Wing, DLC Building, FKG UGM.

This practicum is part of the Basic Topics in Clinical Dental Procedures (DPKKG) course and aims to train students in intraoral examination, a fundamental skill for future dentists.

The practicum was facilitated by lecturers from the Department of Oral Medicine (IPM), including Dr. drg. B. Esti Chrismawati, M.Kes., M.D.Sc., and Drg. Tjut Intan Permata Sari, Sp.PM.. It was also supported by clinical students and Oral Medicine specialist residents from FKG UGM.

According to Drg. Esti, “This activity is crucial in providing practical experience for students in conducting intraoral examinations, which is a fundamental skill that every future dentist must master.”

Throughout the practicum, students performed intraoral examinations on simulated patients under intensive supervision from lecturers and assistants.

They learned to identify various oral diseases and their management, including odontograms, oral topography, examinations of soft and hard dental tissues, salivary glands, and oral cancer screening. Additionally, students were trained to distinguish abnormal oral tissues, classify disorders, and analyze clinical findings.

The participants expressed satisfaction and increased confidence after completing the practicum. Many found the hands-on experience invaluable for honing their clinical skills.

This practicum aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), by equipping students with essential early diagnostic skills for public health.

It also supports Goal 4 (Quality Education) through practical learning methods and Goal 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goal) by fostering collaboration among lecturers, students, and academic institutions.

Through this practicum, FKG UGM continues its commitment to producing competent healthcare professionals ready to face the challenges of modern dentistry.
