The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), welcomed a visit from Dr. Cortino Sukotjo, DDS, PhD, MMSc, MHPE, from the University of Pittsburgh, United States, on Thursday (13 November). The meeting was held in a warm and collegial atmosphere and discussed a range of important topics, including innovations in dental materials, scientific publications, and opportunities for collaboration.
The meeting was attended by the Dean of FKG UGM, Prof. drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D., along with the faculty leadership, the Head of the Department of Prosthodontics, and the Head of the Cooperation Unit. During the discussion, Prof. Suryono highlighted the rapid advancement of research and industry in dental materials in countries such as China and Taiwan, particularly in the development of resin composites and restorative materials. According to him, Indonesia needs to begin building independence in producing its own dental materials and instruments to reduce reliance on imported products.
“Our challenges are not only technological, but also related to consistency, trust in local products, as well as regulations and certification processes that often slow down production,” Prof. Suryono stated. He added that most practical tools and materials used in dental education institutions in Indonesia are still imported.
The discussion also addressed the direction and quality of scientific publications. Prof. Suryono emphasized that publications should be oriented toward relevance, originality, and scientific value, rather than merely targeting international journal categories such as Q1 to Q4. “What is far more important is how research outcomes can be translated into real benefits for society and enhance the institution’s reputation,” he explained.

On this occasion, Dr. Cortino Sukotjo expressed appreciation for FKG UGM’s vision toward research independence and scientific development. He also encouraged FKG UGM to participate in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Meeting to be held in Montreal in 2026. ADEA is a prestigious international forum that focuses on non-clinical issues in dental education.
“We very much look forward to FKG UGM’s participation in the forum. ADEA is an important platform for global institutions to exchange perspectives on the future of dental education,” Dr. Sukotjo stated.
In addition, Dr. Sukotjo encouraged FKG UGM faculty members to actively participate in international webinars on topics such as artificial intelligence in higher education, gender in education, and other emerging issues. According to him, active involvement in global academic forums will help expand professional networks, deepen understanding of global trends in dental education, and strengthen FKG UGM’s international standing.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Prof. Suryono expressed optimism that education and research at FKG UGM can compete with and stand alongside institutions abroad. “FKG UGM must become a hub for collaboration—a place where new ideas grow and bring benefits to the advancement of dental science, both nationally and internationally,” he concluded.
