Monday, 16 December 2024 – The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) hosted an important event in the field of orthodontics at the Auditorium of Margono Soeradji Building, 3rd Floor. This conference was attended by FKG UGM Orthodontic Residents, who participated in the "Evaluation and Clinical Conference: Orthodontic Treatment in Cleft Lip & Palate Patients and Treatment Plan Discussion on Patients Funded by The Netherlands Society – Sumbing Bibir."
This conference aimed to evaluate and discuss orthodontic treatment plans for patients with cleft lip and palate. Cleft lip and palate are congenital conditions that require a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Therefore, this event was highly relevant for enhancing residents' understanding of the challenges and solutions in managing these cases.
Participants, consisting of orthodontic residents, had the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge from lecturers who are experts in orthodontics. The discussions covered both technical aspects of orthodontic treatment and the ethical and psychosocial considerations essential for treating patients with cleft lip and palate. Lecturers provided valuable insights based on their experience handling various cases and shared the latest research relevant to the topic.
One of the key focuses of the conference was the importance of collaboration across multiple disciplines in treating cleft patients. In many cases, orthodontic treatment is closely linked to surgical intervention and other medical care. Therefore, discussions on comprehensive and integrated treatment planning were essential. Residents were encouraged to think critically and creatively in designing treatment plans that are not only clinically effective but also consider the emotional and social needs of patients.
This event was part of FKG UGM’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of orthodontic education and practice in Indonesia. With support from The Netherlands Society, the outcomes of this conference are expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of orthodontic science, particularly in the treatment of cleft lip and palate patients. Additionally, the conference served as a platform for residents to expand their professional networks and exchange experiences with their peers.
During the Q&A session following the presentations, participants demonstrated high enthusiasm by asking insightful questions and sharing their personal experiences in managing similar cases. This dynamic exchange reflected the spirit of collaboration, which is expected to continue growing among orthodontic professionals.
This event is anticipated to be a stepping stone for further collaboration in research and the development of orthodontic treatment. The knowledge and skills gained from this conference will empower residents to make a greater impact on improving the quality of life for cleft lip and palate patients. Furthermore, it reinforces FKG UGM’s position as a leading center for dental education and research in Indonesia.
Beyond being a platform for evaluation and discussion, this conference also served as a catalyst for innovation and improvements in orthodontic treatment in Indonesia. Moreover, it was a concrete step toward supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
