The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), carried out an urban gardening harvest on 10 December 2025 as part of the faculty’s commitment to creating a greener, healthier, and more productive campus environment through the optimal use of limited space.
Rya Mardikawati, S.E., M.Acc., Chair of the Administration, Finance, and General Affairs Working Team of FKG UGM, stated that this direct utilization demonstrates that planting activities are not merely symbolic but genuinely produce fresh food that can be enjoyed by the campus community. “Approximately a month ago, we began planting, and today the results are ready to be enjoyed. One of them is this lettuce harvest,” said Rya.
She explained that urban gardening is an appropriate solution amid limited land availability. It is an attractive option for supporting a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. With only a small space, daily-consumed vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, or chili peppers can be grown.
Rya also highlighted the environmental benefits of having plants on campus. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, making the campus environment feel fresher. The impact will be even greater if implemented consistently.

In addition to environmental benefits, she noted that gardening has a positive impact on mental health. Gardening activities can reduce stress and help maintain emotional balance. “This is a simple activity that helps us feel closer to nature, even within a work environment,” she added.
Plants that do not require large areas can be placed near buildings, making them easy to maintain. This simple approach is part of the faculty’s commitment to fostering a healthier and more sustainable campus environment.
