Yogyakarta, 9 July 2026 – The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), has once again demonstrated its commitment to improving the quality of education and expanding international networks by hosting an international guest lecture featuring Prof. Dr. Naoki Takahashi, DDS, Ph.D., Professor of the Department of Periodontology, Graduate School of Dental Medicine, Hokkaido University, Japan. The event, themed “Periodontal Medicine and Sustainable Healthcare: Connecting Oral and Systemic Health,” highlighted the close relationship between oral health and overall systemic health.
In his presentation, Prof. Takahashi explained that periodontitis, a disease affecting the tissues supporting the teeth, is a chronic infectious and inflammatory disease that not only causes gum damage and tooth loss but may also affect systemic health. Various studies have shown that periodontal disease is associated with several other conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other health disorders.
According to Prof. Takahashi, oral health plays an important role in maintaining quality of life. Tooth loss caused by periodontitis can impair chewing function, affect nutritional intake, and reduce self-confidence. Therefore, prevention and early detection are essential components of maintaining overall public health.
Prof. Takahashi also presented research findings indicating that oral hygiene practices, including the use of dental floss, may help reduce the risk of certain diseases, such as stroke and cardiovascular disorders. He emphasized that simple oral health practices can have a significant impact on overall health.
Through this guest lecture, FKG UGM hopes that students and dental healthcare professionals will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of the periodontal medicine approach, a concept that integrates oral and systemic health. In addition to enriching academic knowledge, the event forms part of FKG UGM's efforts to support the development of sustainable healthcare by increasing awareness of disease prevention and the maintenance of oral and dental health.
