FKG UGM Encourages Students to Seize International Learning Opportunities

Being a student is not only about attending lectures and completing assignments. Stepping out of one’s comfort zone and engaging in new, positive activities can provide valuable opportunities for growth—one of which is gaining international learning experiences through student exchange programs.

The Student Executive Board of the Universitas Gadjah Mada Faculty of Dentistry (BEM FKG UGM) held a Student Exchange and Summer Course Socialization on Saturday, 14 June 2025. The event aimed to broaden students’ understanding of student exchange programs.

In her opening remarks, Prof. drg. Rosa Amalia, M.Kes., Ph.D. encouraged students not to hesitate in taking the chance to study abroad. “Step out of your comfort zone, seek challenges, because by testing yourself, you will grow,”said Rosa.

She noted that student exchange programsoffer many benefits, including practicing foreign language communication, exchanging knowledge about dental education systems in other countries, and enhancing one’s value value as a student.

Meanwhile, Nanda from the BEM FKG UGM Networking Department described the socialization student exchange programs event as a forum for students to understand the importance of international exposure. “Participants can also learn practical tips and tricks in preparing for the program,” she explained.

The session featured students who had previously joined student exchange programs sharing their stories and experiences. In 2024, destinations included Osaka University, Tokushima University, and National Taiwan University (NTU). The returning students shared insights on the selection process, academic adaptation, and enriching cultural experiences.

One of them, Poeti Surya Nadia Nabila, recounted her participation in the International Student Week at Osaka University. She emphasized the importance of having a clear personal motivation before applying student exchange programs. “You need to know exactly why you want to join this program, because that’s something they will ask you during the interview,” she advised.

As a clinical student, Poeti also reminded peers to fulfill academic requirements before departure. “We have to actively communicate, especially with our supervisors, if there are rotations or exams that clash with the student exchange programsschedule,”she added. She also mentioned that undergraduate students benefit from the program since it can be converted into 2 credits (SKS) through an additional course.

The socialization received positive responses from participants, including Olivia, a third-semester student. She expressed her excitement about the opportunities student exchange programs offer. “The stories from seniors are truly inspiring, especially about their experiences studying at the host universities,” said Olivia.

She added that she now feels more determined to join the program and plans to prepare by seeking more information, improving her English proficiency, and preparing documents such as the TOEFL, motivation letter, and curriculum vitae..

Currently, FKG UGM is actively building international collaborations to expand exchange opportunities for students. In addition, FKG will hold a Summer Course in collaboration with UGM’s Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, scheduled for 1–10 July 2025.
