FKG UGM Enhances Emergency Medical Skills Through BLS Training

The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), conducted a Basic Life Support (BLS) training for seventh-semester students from the 2021 cohort. Held at the Margono Soeradji Auditorium over four sessions on 6-7 November 2024, the training aimed to equip students with essential emergency response skills. These competencies are crucial for providing holistic healthcare services as future dentists.

BLS training is an integral part of the mandatory curriculum, designed to raise awareness and enhance students’ practical skills in handling medical emergencies. As prospective healthcare providers, dental students are expected to administer first aid according to standardized procedures, particularly in cases of cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, or other emergencies before further medical intervention is available.

The BLS program included theoretical instruction and hands-on practice, covering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED),choking management, and various emergency scenarios simulated with medical mannequins. Students had the opportunity to practice directly using mannequins and AED devices under the supervision of certified instructors, ensuring they learned and applied the correct procedures according to established medical standards.

Students expressed great enthusiasm for this training, as it provided valuable hands-on experience and boosted their confidence in dealing with emergency situations. By participating in BLS training, they are better prepared to handle urgent medical situations, complementing their primary focus on oral and dental health.

Through this initiative, FKG UGM aims to enhance students’ emergency response skills, reinforcing professionalism and dedication to patient safety. This program aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, which emphasizes not only theoretical mastery but also practical skills necessary for their future roles as healthcare professionals.
