The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada conducted Basic Life Support (BLS) training for educational staff. This training session took place on Thursday, 27 June 2024, in the Discussion Room of the Pediatric Dentistry Department.
drg. Ivan Arie Wahyudi, M.Kes., Ph.D., head of the preclinical laboratory, mentioned in his opening remarks that the purpose of this activity was to ensure that the educational staff at FKG UGM are equipped to provide assistance in the event of an accident in the workplace.
This particular training focused on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR is a first aid procedure under Basic Life Support (BLS) for individuals experiencing cardiac arrest due to disruptions in the heart’s electrical system.
drg. Bramasto Purbo Sejati, Sp.BMM(K), the session’s speaker, stated that anyone suffering from cardiac arrest must receive CPR immediately.
drg. Baban, as he is commonly known, demonstrated the CPR technique on one of the participants. "One palm is placed on the center of the patient’s chest, while the other palm is placed on top of the first hand to apply pressure or compressions," explained drg. Baban.
Compressions should be performed at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute, with a ratio of 30 compressions to 2 ventilations. This cycle should be repeated five times, after which the pulse and breathing should be checked.
Rya Mardikawati, one of the educational staff members who participated in the training, expressed that the training was very beneficial.
“We never know when a workplace accident might occur. By participating in this activity, we are better prepared to provide assistance if needed,” said Rya.
At the end of the session, drg. Baban emphasized the importance of regularly conducting such training to build confidence and familiarity when faced with situations that require CPR.
This activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the third pillar (Good Health and Well-being), and the fourth pillar (Quality Education).
