Children’s dental health is significantly influenced by early oral habits. Habits such as thumb-sucking or mouth-breathing can lead to malocclusion or dental misalignment, which may cause dental health issues later in life. On 27 May 2024, residents from the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) conducted an oral habit screening at SDIT Luqman Al-Hakim. The event involved students, teachers, and parents who participated to support their children’s dental health. “This activity is our effort to help children maintain their dental health from an early age,” stated Drg. Arif Rahman.
During the event, the residents screened for oral habits that could potentially cause malocclusion. They explained to the children the importance of avoiding harmful habits and the benefits of maintaining oral health by regularly brushing their teeth. Parents also received educational information emphasizing the importance of routine dental check-ups and practicing good oral hygiene at home.
The event was not only focused on health screening but also included interactive sessions. Children were encouraged to ask questions about how to care for their teeth, making the learning experience both fun and insightful. “This interactive approach greatly helps children understand the importance of healthy habits from an early age,” said Ahmad Burhani, Principal of SDIT Luqman Al-Hakim.
This initiative is a concrete effort by FKG UGM to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goal). Through activities like this, FKG UGM aims to collaborate with various stakeholders and prevent dental issues among children in the future.
