Students from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) Class of 2022 once again held a pre-event Community Service Program focused on efforts to reduce stunting and improve dental and oral health in Windusari District, Magelang Regency, on Friday (17 January). The activities took place at the Windusari District Hall and SDN 2 Windusari, involving village health cadres and elementary school teachers as the main participants.
At the Windusari District Hall, the event began with remarks from the Head of Windusari District, Edi Purnomo, S.H., and a representative from FKG UGM lecturers, drg. Putri Kusuma W., M.Kes., Sp.KGA(K). The session continued with education on stunting presented by Aviria Ermamilia M. Gz., RD. She explained stunting management and emphasized the need for proper nutrition in supplementary feeding (PMT) and health awareness within families.
The second speaker, drg. Fitrina Rachmadanty Siregar, MPH, delivered material on dental health. She highlighted the importance of maintaining dental hygiene, especially for children. This session aimed to raise health cadres’ awareness about the crucial role of dental health in preventing various diseases.
Meanwhile, at SDN 2 Windusari, the activities opened with a speech from the Principal, Eka Yuli Kurniawati, and a representative from FKG UGM lecturers, drg. Shoimah Alfa M., MDSc., Sp.KGA. Homeroom teachers from grades 1 to 6 also attended. The program included a pre-test for the health cadre teachers, educational sessions on dental and oral health, and interactive methods such as educational games to enhance the teachers’ understanding.
At both locations, the activities began with a pre-test for health cadres to assess their knowledge before the educational sessions. This approach provided a baseline to measure the effectiveness of the education program. The interactive methods used, including games and cooking classes, made the learning experience enjoyable and memorable.
This program aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 Zero Hunger through education on supplementary feeding for children, SDG 3 Good Health and Well-Being by increasing awareness of dental health and stunting prevention, and SDG 4 Quality Education through training village health cadres and elementary school teachers to continue educating the community and children.
Through this initiative by FKG UGM students, it is hoped that stunting rates in Windusari can be significantly reduced, and awareness of the importance of dental and oral health will increase, creating a healthier and more prosperous community.
