A total of 50 new dentists from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) took an important step in their careers on 13 January. They participated in an orientation program designed to prepare them for entering the professional world as dentists.
The session was led by drg. Shinta Ferronika, MDSc., Sp.Perio., Subsp. MP (K), a periodontology specialist currently practicing at Sardjito Hospital. In her presentation, she emphasized the importance of a deep understanding of dental care and oral health. "As dentists, we are not only responsible for treating teeth but also for educating patients about the importance of maintaining overall oral health," she explained.
drg. Shinta highlighted that the internship program serves as a valuable opportunity for new dentists to apply their knowledge and continue learning throughout their careers. She also stressed the significance of communication skills and collaboration with colleagues in daily practice.
The new graduates actively engaged in the orientation program. They had the opportunity to explore strategies for navigating challenges in the workplace, including maintaining service quality amid evolving healthcare regulations.
One of the new dentists, Nadia, shared her excitement upon officially earning her title. "It’s a mix of happiness and emotion. After a long journey filled with challenges, I can finally stand here as a dentist. This is a huge achievement for me," she said.
Nadia also discussed her preparations for the upcoming internship, echoing drg. Shinta’s advice. "As new dentists about to begin our internship, we must equip ourselves by learning more about patient management and strengthening our communication skills. I am also making sure to maintain my physical and mental well-being to be fully prepared for the real working environment," she added.
As the next step, all new dentists are required to complete a six-month internship program. This program is designed to provide hands-on experience in treating patients across various healthcare facilities. The internship is mandatory and serves as a key requirement before they can establish their own practice or join a healthcare institution.
