Red Guava Extract: A New Innovation in Dentistry

Education plays a vital role in shaping one's future. Pursuing higher education can significantly enhance a person's quality of life. On Thursday, 26 September 2024, a thesis proposal seminar by Reisca Tiara Hardiyani was held via Zoom Meeting, attracting the attention of supervisors, examiners, and students from the Master's Program in Dental Science at FKG UGM.

Reisca presented her thesis proposal titled “The Effect of Red Guava (Psidium guajava L.) Extract on the Formation of Dual-Species Biofilm Mass and Structure of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis.” This research focuses on the potential of red guava as a natural material that could contribute to dental health.

The supervising lecturer, drg. Heni Susilowati, M.Kes., Ph.D., led the seminar and warmly welcomed the participants. “This research proposal is commendable. Feedback from the supervising lecturer and examiners is crucial for improving and strengthening this research proposal,” she stated. Constructive comments from examiner Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani and drg. Heribertus Dedy Kusuma Yulianto provided valuable insights for Reisca's proposal.

Beyond serving as an examination venue, the seminar also acted as a learning opportunity for all participants. Through ongoing discussions, other students could observe how the research process is conducted and how to prepare a strong proposal. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, which aims to enhance education and training in the field of dentistry.

This thesis proposal seminar was a significant moment, not only for Reisca but also for the academic community at FKG UGM. Innovations and research initiated by students like Reisca are expected to positively impact the field of dentistry in the future. With this research, it is hoped that the use of natural materials in dental practice will increase, providing safer and more effective alternatives.

The seminar concluded with a strong hope that Reisca's research will pave the way for new innovations in dental health and inspire other students to continue creating and innovating for the greater good.
