Residents of the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Study Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), conducted an educational session on the use of feeding aids for cleft lip and palate patients at RSGM UGM Prof. Soedomo on Monday, 9 December 2024. The event aimed to provide an understanding of the use of nasoalveolar molding (NAM), a feeding aid designed to support the feeding process and development of children with cleft conditions.
The session was led by Prof. drg. Sri Kuswandari, MS, Sp.KGA(K-KKA), who emphasized that early intervention is crucial to ensuring optimal growth and development for children with cleft lip and palate. “Education on feeding aids such as NAM not only assists in feeding but also significantly contributes to the overall health of the child,” she stated.
The event began with an overview of cleft lip and palate, including current statistics indicating the high infant mortality rate due to complications if left untreated. A demonstration of NAM usage was the core of the session, where residents provided hands-on training to parents and caregivers. This interactive session allowed participants to understand how to use the device effectively while providing space for questions and discussions.
In addition to technical aspects, the event highlighted the importance of collaboration among medical professionals, educational institutions, and community organizations to support families facing health challenges such as cleft lip and palate. The residents also emphasized the long-term benefits of NAM in improving children's quality of life.
Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One parent expressed, “We feel more confident after gaining knowledge about using this feeding aid. Thank you to the residents and team for helping us.”
This educational initiative is a concrete step by FKG UGM in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through efforts to improve children's health, Goal 4 (Quality Education) through inclusive education dissemination, and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering synergy among various stakeholders.
