Educational Outreach on the Impact of Mouth Breathing Habits in Children at TK ABA Ketanggungan

Residents from the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), visited TK ABA Ketanggungan in Yogyakarta to educate children on the effects of mouth breathing habits on dental health. This session, held on 23 October 2024, aimed to raise awareness among kindergarten students about the importance of proper breathing techniques for overall dental and bodily health.

The team of residents, including Drg. Ayu Kristin, Drg. Irma Damayanti, Drg. Sabrina Ceasy, Drg. Dini Ika Mawardhani, and Drg. Arif Rahman Setyawan, explained that mouth breathing can lead to dental issues such as misaligned teeth and gum diseases. They also highlighted its impact on a child's overall development.

Children engaged in fun and interactive learning activities using visual aids and hands-on exercises. This approach made the session enjoyable and helped reinforce their understanding of the importance of nasal breathing.

drg. Ayu Kristin emphasized the importance of early education in preventing dental problems. “Teaching children about the consequences of mouth breathing at an early age helps them develop better habits that will benefit their dental health in the future,” she stated. The residents also provided tips on encouraging nasal breathing, which is crucial for both dental and overall health.

drg. Irma Damayanti added, "Nasal breathing is essential for maintaining dental health and ensuring optimal facial growth in children."

The event was well-received by teachers at TK ABA Ketanggungan, who acknowledged the session as valuable insight that could be integrated into daily teaching activities. This collaboration demonstrated how partnerships between educational institutions and the community can create positive impacts in supporting children's health.

This activity contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
