Children with Special Needs (ABK) are a high-risk group for dental health issues, particularly dental caries and periodontal disease. Unfortunately, they often receive delayed or even no dental care.
The Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), is demonstrating its commitment to the oral health of children with special needs. On 16 July 2024, FKG UGM organized a community service event at SLB Negeri 1 Bantul. This event was a key component of the Dental Summer Course 2024, which focused on "Innovation in Digital Dentistry for Inclusive Oral Health."
The event involved pediatric dentistry residents accompanied by clinic supervisors (DPJP). Students from SLB Negeri 1 Bantul had their oral cavities examined, followed by various treatments. Some of the procedures included dental fillings, simple extractions, fissure sealants, and fluoride applications. "These actions aim to prevent and address common dental problems in children," said drg. Shoimah Alfa Makmur, MDSc., Sp.KGA.
Through this initiative, it is hoped that the quality of dental health for students at SLB Negeri 1 Bantul will significantly improve. Additionally, the event is expected to raise awareness among parents about the importance of maintaining dental health from an early age.
To ensure continuity of care, the residents from the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program have developed a follow-up care plan to be implemented at RSGM UGM Prof. Soedomo. This will enable the students of SLB Negeri 1 Bantul to receive optimal care for maintaining their oral health.
