Odontectomy, a surgical procedure to remove impacted wisdom teeth, aims to prevent potential dental health problems caused by such impactions. These issues include dental caries, gingivitis, pericoronitis, cellulitis, abscesses, or, in severe cases, cysts.
The 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) report revealed that the most prevalent dental issue in Indonesia is damaged or painful teeth (45.3%). Meanwhile, swollen gums or abscesses were the most common oral health problems, affecting 14% of the population.
Given the high prevalence of these dental problems, it is crucial for healthcare providers, particularly dentists, to understand the management of odontectomy cases. To address this need and in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education)—the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) organized a hands-on odontectomy.
The hands-on session was part of the annual Dentistry Collaborative Update (DCU) series. Before leading the hands-onsession, drg. Yosaphat Bayu Rosanto, MDSc., Sp.BMM.Subsp.IDM(K), had delivered a presentation during the event's webinar.
hands-on training was held at the DEF Classroom of the Dental Learning Center (DLC) building at FKG UGM on Saturday (26/10). Fourteen participants, including general dentists and dental students, attended the hands-on session. drg. Yosaphat covered patient preparation techniques, surgical procedures, and post-operative care.
drg. Yosaphat emphasized the importance of administering anesthesia before surgery. He explained that there are two techniques for anesthesia: direct and indirect. "Both direct and indirect techniques have their own advantages and limitations. The choice depends on the operator’s preference," he said.
drg. Vania, one of the participants, expressed her gratitude to Drg. Yosaphat for his patient guidance, ensuring that all participants understood the odontectomy procedure. She noted that such hands-on hands-on sessions are highly beneficial for honing practical skills, especially for newly graduated general dentists. "Looking forwardto more Hands-On sessions led by drg. Yosaphat or other oral surgery lecturers from UGM," drg. Vania concluded.
The Faculty of Dentistry at UGM frequently organizes seminars, workshops, and hands-on training sessions through its affiliated unit, the iDSDC.
