Mastery of the English language has become increasingly important in the digital age, especially in the academic world. English is not only a tool for communication but also a bridge for collaboration, sharing knowledge, and publishing research internationally. For lecturers, strong English skills are crucial to improve the quality of scientific presentations and participate in global academic forums.
Recognizing this, lecturers from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), particularly from the Department of Dental Biomaterials (IBKG), participated in the Preparation Course for English Conversation and Presentation Skills organized by the Foreign Languages Learning Service, Language Center, Foreign Languages Learning Service, Language Center, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM. The course ran from 13 May to 19 July 2024, with weekly 2-hour sessions, totaling 20 hours of lessons. Through this initiative, FKG UGM provided an opportunity for lecturers to strengthen their English skills in an academic context.
Dr. drg. Harsini, MS, one of the course participants, stated, "This activity refreshed our memory of English and gave us the chance to speak and converse in English." Meanwhile, drg. Mutiara Annisa added, "Through this course, we received constructive feedback on our presentations, and the tutor was very detailed in reviewing even our pronunciation.”
Through this initiative, FKG UGM contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG Goal 4 (Quality Education) and SDG Goal 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goals). This course is expected to not only enhance lecturers' international communication skills but also strengthen interactions with global academic partners and improve the quality of scientific presentations at international forums.
