Lecturers from the Department of Dental Biomaterials (IBKG) at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), conducted trials of a new device at the Dental Learning Center Biomaterials Laboratory on Wednesday, 6 November 2024. The tested equipment, a multi curing unit, is designed to enhance student learning in handling heat-polymerized acrylic resin materials.
The multi curing unit plays a crucial role in dental technology. It is used to polymerize resin materials such as acrylic and composite, transforming them from liquid into strong and stable solid forms. This new device offers advantages over conventional equipment as it features multiple curing modes that can be adjusted based on the material type. These features enhance flexibility and accuracy, ensuring more efficient polymerization.
During the trial, IBKG lecturers operated the multi curing unit according to the manufacturer’s protocols to ensure optimal performance before integrating it into student practical sessions. The equipment is expected to help students gain a deeper understanding of resin manipulation technology and techniques, particularly in the fabrication of dental prostheses such as dentures and splints.
Dr. drg. Friska Ani Rahman, MDSc, one of the IBKG lecturers involved in the trial, stated, "This multi curing unit enables more uniform and efficient polymerization. With this equipment, students can learn to use advanced technology that is relevant to clinical practice, preparing them for future challenges."
The addition of this equipment is a concrete step by FKG UGM in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), by ensuring access to quality education for all. Students now have the opportunity to learn using modern facilities that enhance their practical skills and broaden their knowledge of cutting-edge dental technology.
Going forward, the multi curing unit will be utilized in student practical sessions in upcoming semesters. It is hoped that its use will provide a more innovative and effective learning experience, further improving the quality of dental education at FKG UGM. With this initiative, FKG UGM remains committed to producing competent, innovative, and globally competitive dental professionals.
