UGM Faculty of Dentistry Lecturer Wins 3rd Place Scientific Award at the 8th TIP IPAMAGI National Symposium

Gum inflammation during pregnancy is often underestimated. However, this condition can increase the risk of premature birth and impact both maternal and fetal health. This issue became the focus of Dr. drg. Friska Ani Rahman, M.DSc., lecturer at the UGM Faculty of Dentistry, who conducted research on the use of natural ingredients as supportive solutions for oral hygiene in pregnant women.

Through her research titled “The Effect of Lemongrass and Lemon Mouthwash on the Number of Immune Cells in Pregnant Rats with Gingivitis”, Friska won 3rd Place in the Scientific Award at the 8th TIP IPAMAGI National Symposium, held in Padang, 28–29 June 2025.

The study explored the effectiveness of a mouthwash made from lemongrass oil and lemon, processed using nanotechnology. The formulation was tested on pregnant rats induced with gingivitis, and the results showed a decrease in inflammatory cells, particularly macrophages.

“Gingivitis during pregnancy can have systemic impacts, but it is often ignored. We tested a formulation that combines natural ingredients with nanotechnology to ensure it is safe and effective, especially for pregnant women,” Friska explained.

She further highlighted the need for continued clinical trials so that this research can be developed as an alternative oral hygiene product besides tooth brushing. According to her, nature-based innovations are crucial to meet public demand for safe, affordable, and pregnancy-friendly products.

For Friska, this award is recognition of her long research journey and a reaffirmation that UGM Faculty of Dentistry lecturers actively contribute to academia and research. “As a lecturer, I see this achievement as proof that we not only teach in classrooms but also produce impactful research that can be translated into benefits for society,” she said.

The TIP IPAMAGI National Symposium is attended by participants from various dental education institutions across Indonesia and serves as a prestigious platform for exchanging ideas and scientific findings among young researchers and practitioners.

Friska’s success is also supported by the institution. She noted that UGM Faculty of Dentistry provides ease of research licensing, adequate laboratory facilities, and an academic environment that fosters interdisciplinary and interfaculty collaboration.
