Hanoi, 17-18 October 2024 – The 15th Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology (APSP) Meeting, held in Hanoi, Vietnam, served as a platform for exchanging knowledge and discussing advancements in periodontology. The seminar was attended by experts and practitioners from the Asia-Pacific region, with the theme "Contemporary Concepts in Comprehensive Periodontal Management”. The conference featured a wide range of current topics presented by leading specialists.
This year, a delegation from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) participated, including drg. Rezmelia Sari, MSc., Sp.Perio., SubSp.RPID(K), a lecturer from the Periodontology Department, who presented UGM's outstanding research in the form of a poster. The poster was titled “The Potency of Liquid Leucocyte Platelet-Rich Fibrin as Non-Surgical Papilla Reconstruction: a Histological Study on Modified Open Gingival Embrasure Model.”
This study explores the potential of using liquid leucocyte platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF), a substance often discarded, as a non-surgical approach for interdental papilla reconstruction.
drg. Rezmelia's research used a modified open gingival embrasure model to observe the histological effects of liquid L-PRF injection. Interdental papilla reconstruction is crucial for both aesthetic and functional outcomes in periodontal therapy, and this study could offer new insights into utilizing L-PRF for this purpose.
The findings may promote the development of more effective periodontal treatment protocols, with a focus on patient comfort and recovery.
In her presentation, drg. Rezmelia emphasized the importance of incorporating research findings like these into the dental education curriculum, ensuring that future graduates are better prepared to face clinical challenges with innovative approaches. Through her participation in the APSP Meeting, Drg. Rezmelia hopes to inspire other practitioners and researchers to explore new techniques in periodontal therapy.
This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by supporting sustainable healthcare innovation.
The APSP conference marked an important moment for the UGM delegation to strengthen their commitment to advancing periodontal education and research internationally, and this achievement highlights UGM's role in shaping a more innovative and sustainable future for dentistry in the Asia-Pacific region.
