The Student-Centered Learning (SCL) approach has become increasingly popular as it is believed to enhance student engagement and improve the quality of learning outcomes. To promote the implementation of SCL and refresh lecturers, the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) organized a Student-Centered Learning Workshop on 5-6 August 2024.
The event was opened by the Dean of FKG UGM, Prof. drg. Suryono. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of active student participation in learning activities. “I hope this event can formulate a learning program plan that enhances student participation,” said Suryono.
SCL is a learning model that places students at the center of the educational process. The role of the instructor shifts from being the primary teacher to a facilitator who helps students achieve their own learning goals.
dr. Yoyo Suhoyo, M.Med.Ed. Ph.D., the resource person for this event, emphasized that the instructor’s role is to respond to and elaborate on students' questions for discussion. “This approach will create a more vibrant classroom atmosphere,” Yoyo stated.
The expected output of this activity is that faculty will be able to create Semester Learning Program Plans (RPKPS) that are oriented toward SCL. Faculty will also be able to design more dynamic learning programs that respond to student needs.
Dr. drg. Rosa Amalia, M.Kes., Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, expressed her hope that this event would produce outcomes aligned with the teaching and learning needs at FKG UGM. “The RPKPS will serve as a guideline for faculty in conducting teaching and learning activities,” Rosa said.
