Department of Periodontology FKG UGM Expands Knowledge on Implantology at ITI South East Asia 2025

The Periodontology Department of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), participated in the Annual Scientific Meeting organized by the International Team for Implantology (ITI) South East Asia Section, held on 21–22 February 2025 at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta. This seminar served as an important platform for academics and clinicians to deepen their knowledge in Implantology while building networks with experts from various countries. Participation in this event is expected to enrich the department’s expertise and open opportunities to join ITI, enabling access to valuable resources and membership benefits.

Representing the Periodontology Department at UGM were lecturers drg. Kwartarini Murdiastuti, Sp.Perio Sub Sp. R.P.I.D (K), Ph.D., and drg. Sri Pramestri Lastianny, M.S., Sp.Perio(K). The seminar featured prominent speakers such as Dr. Rino Burkhardt, Prof. Dr. Bjarni Pjetursson, and Dr. Charlotte Stilwell, who covered key topics including peri-implant mucosa surgery, treatment planning for elderly patients, and selection of materials and prosthetic design in implant rehabilitation. Additionally, the seminar provided insights into the ITI curriculum, scholarships, and research grants—valuable opportunities for academics and researchers alike.

The seminar offered a deeper understanding of the latest developments in Implantology and broadened perspectives on treatment strategies for patients with complex conditions. It also facilitated experience sharing among academics and clinicians from different countries, promoting best practices in the field.

drg. Kwartarini Murdiastuti, Sp.Perio Sub Sp. R.P.I.D (K), Ph.D., shared her impressions of the event: “This seminar was very beneficial, especially for academics and clinicians who want to deepen their understanding of modern implantology. We gained a lot of valuable knowledge, including insights on managing patients with complex conditions.” She also added that following this seminar, the Periodontology Department at UGM plans to consider ITI membership to support collaboration with the organization

Beyond gaining new knowledge, this seminar also opened avenues for collaboration between UGM’s Periodontology Department, ITI, and other institutions. With an expanding network, it is hoped that UGM’s Faculty of Dentistry will become more active in international research and collaborations in Implantology. More in-depth, evidence-based research is essential to improve the quality of education and oral healthcare services, particularly in Periodontology and Implantology.

Through participation in this international scientific forum, the Periodontology Department aims to continue contributing to the advancement of dental science, especially in Periodontology and Implantology. This effort aligns with UGM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 and SDG 4, concerning health and quality education. By keeping pace with scientific and technological developments, the Faculty of Dentistry UGM is committed to providing the best education for students and optimal health services for the community.
