IKGP–KGM Department of FKG UGM Submits Draft Clinical Practice Guidelines for Primary Dental Care to PB PDGI

The Department of Preventive Dentistry and Dental Public Health (Ilmu Kedokteran Gigi Pencegahan dan Kesehatan Gigi Masyarakat/IKGP-KGM), Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), officially submitted a Draft Clinical Practice Guideline (Panduan Praktik Klinik/PPK) for Primary Dental Care to the Executive Board of the Indonesian Dental Association (Pengurus Besar Persatuan Dokter Gigi Indonesia/PB PDGI) on 20 December 2025.

The draft was formally handed over by the Head of the IKGP-KGM Department, drg. Lisdrianto Hanindriyo, MPH, Ph.D., to PB PDGI, represented by Prof. Dr. drg. Sri Susilowati, M.Kes., and witnessed by drg. Bulan Rachmadi, M.Kes., drg. Bimo Rintoko, Sp.Pros., and drg. Yeni Yuliani, MM., MARS.

drg. Lisdrianto Hanindriyo, MPH, Ph.D., stated that the submission of the draft guideline reflects the department’s commitment to supporting the advancement of the dental profession in Indonesia while contributing to improvements in the quality of community dental and oral healthcare services.

“The submitted draft Clinical Practice Guideline was developed based on evidence-based dentistry, , patient safety principles, and the context of Indonesia’s healthcare system. It is expected to serve as a reference for standardized, safe, and high-quality clinical practice for dentists,” he stated at the PB PDGI Headquarters.

He further emphasized the urgency of developing and implementing Clinical Practice Guidelines for Primary Dental Care. Data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (Survei Kesehatan Indonesia/SKI 2023), corroborated by results from the Free Health Check Program (Cek Kesehatan Gratis) conducted by the Ministry of Health, indicate that more than half of Indonesia’s population continues to experience dental and oral health problems. High caries prevalence persists across all age groups, alongside disparities in access to and quality of services between regions. At the same time, variations in clinical practice remain evident in areas such as diagnosis, treatment selection, and follow-up care.

“This condition has the potential to lead to inconsistencies in service quality and increased risks to patient safety,” he explained.

In this context, Clinical Practice Guidelines play a crucial role as a professional reference to support dentists in making appropriate, rational, and accountable clinical decisions. Moreover, PPKs serve as strategic instruments in supporting the national health financing system, improving service efficiency, and strengthening the legal and ethical dimensions of dental practice.

The submission of this draft underscores the role of academic institutions in supporting professional organizations through evidence-based policy development. “We sincerely hope that this draft can be reviewed, refined, and subsequently adopted by PB PDGI as an official guideline to be widely used by dentists throughout Indonesia,” he added.

Through close collaboration between academia and professional organizations, the Draft Clinical Practice Guidelines for Dentistry are expected to become a foundational element in enhancing the quality of dental practice and ultimately improving the oral health status of the Indonesian population.
