How to Prevent Cavities in Back Teeth

Back teeth, or molars, play a crucial role in the chewing process. However, because of their location, they are more difficult to reach when brushing, making them one of the areas most prone to cavities. Keeping molars healthy requires special attention and consistent habits from an early age.

Why Are Back Teeth Prone to Cavities?

Molars have uneven surfaces and many grooves, which make it easier for food particles to get trapped. If not cleaned properly, bacteria in the mouth convert these food remnants into acids that damage the enamel.

This is supported by a study conducted by Faculty of Dentistry UGM student Muhammad Saleh, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. drg. Al. Supartinah S., S.U, Sp.KGA.(K). The study found that frequent consumption of sugary foods and improper brushing techniques are major causes of cavities in elementary school children. Using the cariogram method to analyze cavity risk, the research revealed that diet and oral hygiene are the two biggest contributors to dental caries, both in urban and rural schools.

Steps to Prevent Cavities in Back Teeth

Here are some steps to help prevent cavities, especially in molars:

  1. Brush Properly
Use a toothbrush with soft, small bristles to reach the back of the mouth. Brush gently and thoroughly for at least two minutes, twice a day.
  2. Use Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride strengthens enamel and protects teeth from acid damage.
  3. Floss Regularly
Dental floss helps clean plaque and food debris trapped between back teeth that brushing often misses.
  4. Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
High sugar consumption significantly increases the risk of cavities, as highlighted in the study. It is best to limit sugary snacks, especially between main meals.
  5. Regular Dental Check-ups
Visiting the dentist every six months helps detect early signs of cavities, including in hard-to-reach molars.
  6. Consider Dental Sealants
Sealants can be applied to molars to prevent food particles from entering deep grooves.

Molars are vital yet often neglected, making them highly vulnerable to cavities. Based on the study in Yogyakarta elementary schools, oral hygiene and diet are two dominant factors that must be managed from an early age to prevent tooth decay. With proper care and consistent habits, molars can remain healthy and functional for a lifetime.
