How to Overcome Dental Issues After Getting Braces

Getting braces is an important step in improving tooth alignment and achieving an ideal smile. However, after installation, some common issues may arise, such as discomfort, oral tissue sores, plaque buildup, and difficulty cleaning certain areas of the teeth. These problems often cause concern for patients and require special attention.

1. Discomfort After Installation

Discomfort is common for a few days after getting braces. This is usually caused by the pressure exerted by the wires on the teeth. To alleviate this, patients can use pain relievers recommended by their dentist. Additionally, consuming soft foods like soup, porridge, or yogurt can help reduce strain on the teeth during the adjustment period.

2. Sores on Oral Tissues

Brackets attached to the teeth may rub against the inner cheeks or lips, causing small sores. A practical way to reduce this friction is by using orthodontic wax, which can be applied to the brackets to make them smoother. If sores have already formed, using an antiseptic mouthwash can speed up healing and prevent infections.

3. Plaque Buildup and Cavity Risk

Braces create more areas that are hard to reach with a regular toothbrush, increasing plaque buildup and the risk of cavities. To prevent this, use a special toothbrush designed for braces, featuring a small head and soft bristles. Flossing is also essential, using floss threaders specifically made for braces. Another option is to use a water flosser to thoroughly clean between the teeth and wires.

4. Foods to Avoid

Hard foods like nuts, popcorn, or chewing gum can damage wires or brackets. It’s best to avoid sticky and hard foods, and instead, cut food into small pieces for easier chewing. Regular consultations with a dentist also allow for adjustments if any damage occurs to the braces.

5. Routine Dental Checkups

Regular checkups are essential to ensure the braces function properly and to address any potential issues. The dentist will examine the teeth, adjust wire tension, and provide personalized care recommendations.

Getting braces requires commitment to maintaining oral hygiene and health. With proper care, issues like discomfort, sores, and plaque buildup can be managed. Regular consultations with a dentist are key to ensuring the treatment progresses smoothly and delivers optimal results. This also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
