How to Prevent Sensitive Teeth During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a period of significant changes, not only physically but also in oral and dental health. Many pregnant women experience tooth sensitivity, often caused by hormonal changes and altered eating habits. To maintain good oral health and prevent sensitivity during pregnancy, several steps can be taken.

1. Maintain Oral Hygiene

One of the most effective ways to prevent tooth sensitivity is by maintaining good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste, ensuring that all areas of the mouth, including the gums and tongue, are cleaned to remove bacteria and food debris. Additionally, using dental floss daily is crucial for cleaning areas that a toothbrush cannot reach.

A study conducted by Dr. drg. Bambang Priyono, S.U., on pregnant women in Kupang Regency Health Centers, found that oral hygiene behavior is significantly influenced by awareness and knowledge about the importance of oral health during pregnancy.

2. Maintain a Balance Diet

Diet during pregnancy plays a crucial role in dental health. Choose foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus, as these nutrients support healthy teeth and bones. Dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and milk, as well as fish and green vegetables, should be a key part of your diet. Avoid foods and beverages that are high in sugar, as they can increase the risk of tooth decay and sensitivity.

According to research by Dr. drg. Julita Hendrartini, M.Kes., and Dr. drg. Sri Widiati, MPH., conducted at Sumberjaya Health Center, Majalengka, access to education and information during the COVID-19 pandemic played a crucial role in helping pregnant women understand the importance of nutrition for oral health.

3. Avoid Trigger Foods and Drinks

Certain foods and beverages are known to trigger tooth sensitivity. Acidic foods such as citrus fruits and carbonated drinks can erode tooth enamel. If you consume acidic foods, try to eat them alongside other foods, or rinse your mouth with water afterward to reduce their effects. Additionally, avoid extremely hot or cold foods, which can increase sensitivity.

4. Schedule Regular Dental Checkups

During pregnancy, it is essential to schedule routine dental checkups. Visiting the dentist is not only necessary for regular examinations but also for discussing potential issues such as tooth sensitivity. A dentist can provide special recommendations and, if necessary, prescribe appropriate oral care products to manage sensitivity.

5. Use the Right Oral Care Products

If you are already experiencing tooth sensitivity, consider using toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. These products typically contain active ingredients that help seal dentin tubules, reducing pain and discomfort. Additionally, use alcohol-free mouthwash, as alcohol-containing products can cause dry mouth, which may worsen sensitivity issues.

6. Manage Symptoms Wisely

If you experience pain due to tooth sensitivity, do not hesitate to consult your dentist. They can recommend safe treatments for pregnant women, such as topical applications that help reduce discomfort. Avoid self-medication, especially with products not proven safe for pregnancy.

These steps not only enhance maternal health but also contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Promoting oral health awareness as part of overall well-being; SDG 4: Quality Education – Ensuring pregnant women receive adequate knowledge about personal and infant health through educational programs at community health centers (Puskesmas).

Preventing tooth sensitivity during pregnancy requires extra attention, but by following these steps, you can maintain good oral health and enjoy a healthy pregnancy. Always prioritize oral care and consult a healthcare provider if any issues arise. Remember, taking care of your teeth also means taking care of your baby's health.
