Fostering Active Communication with International Class Students

Effective communication is a key element in creating meaningful learning interactions, especially when engaging with Generation Z students in international classes.

The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) hosted I Made Andi Arsana, S.T., M.E., Ph.D., for a knowledge-sharing session titled "Reinventing Academic Engagement". This event aimed to equip lecturers with more active, creative, and participatory communication skills when teaching international class students.

In his presentation, the lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering UGM emphasized the importance of understanding intergenerational characteristics. He highlighted the need for adaptive, interactive, and real-life-relevant teaching approaches. Among the methods he uses to engage students are the use of technology, analogies, concept visualization, and gamification in learning.

Known for his skill in visualizing teaching materials through PowerPoint presentations, Made Andi stressed the importance of transforming descriptive narratives into visuals to help students better absorb the information.

“Presentations are not about transferring text from books to slides. They’re a tool to make lengthy content easier to understand,” he explained. He believes effective visualization enhances student comprehension—especially for Gen Z, who respond more readily to visual formats.

In addition, he underlined the importance of psychological aspects in classroom interactions. Building student engagement is not only about methodology but also about creating a supportive learning environment. “If we want students to actively participate in class, we need to create a space where they feel safe, respected, and heard,” he stated.

With this more adaptive approach, lecturers at FKG UGM are expected to strengthen the institution’s competitiveness in the global education landscape. This event is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of learning and academic experience for all students, particularly those from diverse cultural and national backgrounds.
