How to Maintain Oral Hygiene While Fasting

Fasting often leads to a drier mouth due to reduced saliva production, which can increase the risk of bad breath and the growth of bacteria that cause dental and gum problems. Therefore, maintaining oral hygiene during fasting is crucial to ensure optimal oral health.

In the article Tips to Prevent Bad Breath During Fasting, Prof. drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D. explains that saliva production decreases while fasting. This occurs because the chewing muscles are not active as they would be during regular eating.

One of the main ways to maintain oral hygiene while fasting is by brushing your teeth regularly—especially after suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and iftar (breaking the fast). Using toothpaste that contains fluoride is also recommended to protect tooth enamel from damage.

In addition to brushing, cleaning between the teeth with dental floss is highly encouraged. Floss helps remove food particles stuck in areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Using an alcohol-free mouthwash can also help keep the breath fresh without causing the mouth to become drier, as alcohol-based mouthwashes can exacerbate dryness.

The food you consume during suhoor and iftar also plays a role in maintaining oral health during fasting. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into both meals. Avoid overly sweet and sticky foods, as they can increase the risk of tooth decay. It’s also advisable to steer clear of foods with strong odors, such as jengkol, petai, durian, or onions. Drinking enough water during suhoor and iftar is important to keep the mouth moist and prevent dehydration. Aim for at least eight glasses of water daily to help prevent dry mouth and bad breath.

In addition to maintaining oral hygiene and a healthy diet, avoiding habits like smoking can also help preserve oral health during fasting. Smoking can cause stronger bad breath and increase the risk of gum disease.

Maintaining oral hygiene during fasting is not just about comfort—it’s also a part of maintaining overall health. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on good health and well-being, SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation, and SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production. By brushing and flossing regularly, choosing the right foods, and staying hydrated, you can keep your mouth healthy and fresh throughout the fasting day.
