How to Manage Bleeding Gums During Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings many changes to the body, including oral health. One common issue experienced by pregnant women is bleeding gums, especially when brushing teeth or eating. This condition is usually caused by hormonal changes that increase blood flow to the gum tissue, making it more sensitive and prone to inflammation. If left untreated, bleeding gums can develop into pregnancy gingivitis, which may affect both maternal and fetal health.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the key step in addressing this problem. Pregnant women are advised to brush their teeth twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. In addition, regular flossing can help remove food debris and plaque that may worsen gum inflammation.

A healthy diet also plays an important role in supporting gum health. Consuming foods rich in vitamin C and calcium—such as fruits, leafy green vegetables, and dairy products—can help strengthen gum tissues and reduce the risk of bleeding. Avoid sugary or sticky foods that may encourage bacterial growth in the mouth and worsen gum conditions.

Dr. drg. Ahmad Syaify, Sp.Perio (K) , explains that gum inflammation should not be taken lightly due to its potential impact on pregnancy. If bleeding persists or worsens, it is recommended to consult a dentist promptly. Regular dental check-ups during pregnancy are crucial to detect and prevent more serious oral health issues. Dentists can provide safe treatment options for pregnant women and suggest additional steps to maintain gum health throughout pregnancy.

With proper care, pregnant women can manage bleeding gums and maintain oral health, which also contributes positively to fetal well-being. Incorporating oral hygiene into prenatal care helps ensure both mother and baby stay healthy throughout the pregnancy. This effort also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education) by raising awareness among pregnant women, and Goal 5 (Gender Equality) by ensuring equal access to healthcare for women.
