Dental plaque is a sticky layer that forms on the surface of teeth and can lead to oral health problems such as cavities and gum disease. Removing plaque properly is crucial to maintaining good oral and dental health. Here are some effective techniques you can apply:
Proper Toothbrushing Technique
Brushing your teeth is the most important first step in removing plaque. A study conducted by UGM Faculty of Dentistry student Varadita Vebri Damayanti, under the supervision of Dr. drg. Rinaldi Budi Utomo, MS, Sp.KGA(K) and drg. Siti Bale Sri Rantinah, SU, Sp.KGA(K), showed that proper toothbrushing technique can significantly reduce plaque buildup. Here are the correct steps for brushing your teeth:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
- Brush your teeth using circular motions for at least two minutes, making sure to cover all tooth surfaces, including the back and the gumline.
- Don’t forget to brush your tongue and the inside of your mouth to reduce bacteria.
Using Siwak to Reduce Plaque
One proven natural technique is using siwak. Research by UGM Faculty of Dentistry student Tria Nurdian Tini, supervised by drg. Ivan Arie Wahyudi, M.Kes., Ph.D and drg. Elastria widita, M.Sc., Ph.D., revealed that the siwak twig (Salvadora persica) is effective in reducing plaque accumulation. Siwak is known for its antimicrobial properties, making it beneficial for oral hygiene. Here's how to use siwak:
- Take a siwak twig and peel one end to form brush-like bristles.
- Use the siwak to brush your teeth for a few minutes, focusing on areas with more plaque buildup.
- After use, clean the siwak and store it for future use.
The Importance of a Healthy Diet
Your diet plays a major role in oral health. Avoiding sugary and acidic foods can help reduce plaque buildup. Consuming foods rich in calcium and vitamin D is also beneficial for maintaining strong and healthy teeth.
Regular Dental Check-ups
Routine dental check-ups are essential. Dentists can perform professional cleanings to remove plaque that is hard to reach and provide personalized advice on proper dental care.
***
Removing plaque requires a combination of proper brushing technique, natural tools like siwak, a healthy diet, and regular dental visits. By applying these techniques, you can maintain healthy teeth and prevent more serious dental problems in the future.
