Safe Application of Tooth Whitening Products

Tooth whitening using bleaching products has become increasingly popular due to its practicality, ease of home use, and fast visible results. However, the safety of these products remains a primary concern, as active ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide can affect enamel surface structure if used without supervision or beyond recommended dosages. Therefore, understanding their mechanism, risks, and safe limits is essential for users.

Tooth whitening strips work by gradually releasing bleaching agents onto the tooth surface. The relatively low concentrations of active ingredients in over-the-counter products are generally designed for repeated use over a certain period to remain safe for enamel. Nevertheless, several studies indicate that higher peroxide concentrations may increase the risk of microstructural changes in teeth. This aligns with research conducted by FKG UGM student Fita Aliftariasa, under the supervision of drg. Wignyo Hadriyanto, M.S., Sp.KG(K), and Dr. drg. Ema Mulyawati, M.S., Sp.KG(K), entitled “The Effect of 10% and 20% Carbamide Peroxide Home Bleaching Concentrations on Enamel Surface Roughness,” which reported that higher bleaching concentrations may increase enamel roughness, highlighting the need for careful selection of concentration and application duration.

Untuk memastikan keamanan maksimal dalam aplikasi whitening stripsTo ensure maximum safety in the use of whitening strips, several key principles should be observed. First, choose products with standardized bleaching concentrations and official distribution approval. Second, strictly follow usage instructions without exceeding the recommended application time. Third, individuals with tooth sensitivity, extensive restorations, or a history of periodontal disease should consult a dentist before using whitening products. In addition, use should be discontinued if excessive sensitivity or soft tissue irritation occurs.

Tooth whitening can be performed safely when users understand its limitations and choose appropriate methods. Whitening strips remain an effective and relatively safe option when used responsibly and in accordance with professional recommendations. In this way, aesthetic benefits can be achieved without compromising enamel health.
