Can Teeth Become Infected Without Symptoms?

Tooth infections are often associated with pain, swelling, or unpleasant breath odor. However, not all infections show obvious symptoms. Many cases of dental infections develop silently without clear clinical signs, which can be dangerous because treatment is often delayed.

Asymptomatic Dental Infections: A Phenomenon to Watch Out For

Teeth that appear healthy on the surface may still be infected in the root area or supporting tissues beneath the gums. Such infections can be caused by bacteria entering through tiny cavities, cracks in fillings, or even from incomplete root canal treatment.

In many cases, these infections can progress into abscesses or spread to surrounding tissues without causing noticeable pain in the early stages. This makes asymptomatic tooth infections particularly dangerous, as individuals may only realize the problem once the condition worsens.

The Role of Bacteria in Dental Infections

One of the bacteria involved in oral infections is Streptococcus mitis. This bacterium can become an opportunistic pathogen when the immune system weakens or when micro-injuries occur in gum tissues.

Moringa leaf extract at concentrations of 40% and 80% has been shown to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mitis Streptococcus mitis, one of the known causes of oral infections. This finding is in line with research conducted by Tamara Anggayasti, a student at FKG UGM, under the supervision of drg. Cahya Yustisia Hasan, Sp.BM(K) and drg. Yosaphat Bayu Rosanto, MDSc., Sp.BMM(K).

This research indicates that natural ingredients such as moringa leaves have the potential to act as antibacterial agents to help prevent oral infections that may otherwise go undetected.

What Can Be Done?

  1. Have regular dental check-ups, at least every 6 months, even if there are no complaints.
  2. Pay attention to small changes, such as gum color, breath odor, or teeth that feel “different” when biting.
  3. Maintain oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and using dental floss.
  4. Consume foods that support oral health, including natural ingredients with antibacterial potential such as moringa leaves.
  5. Consult a dentist immediately if there is suspicion of infection, even in the absence of pain.

***

Asymptomatic dental infections are real and should not be underestimated. By raising awareness, maintaining oral hygiene, and utilizing the potential of natural ingredients, we can prevent the risks of hidden infections. Don’t wait for pain to start caring about your oral health.
