Flossing, or cleaning between the teeth with dental floss, often raises concerns, especially among those who are new to the habit. One of the most common questions is: Can flossing cause gums to bleed?
The answer is not as simple as “yes” or “no.” In fact, improper flossing techniques can indeed cause bleeding. On the other hand, gum bleeding during flossing may also indicate early gum inflammation (gingivitis) caused by plaque buildup that has not been properly removed.
Bleeding Gums: Sign of Wrong Technique or Unhealthy Gums?
Healthy gums typically will not bleed when flossing is done correctly. If you experience bleeding while flossing, it may be due to:
- Rough technique or pressing the floss too hard against the gums.
- Flossing suddenly without prior habit.
- Plaque and food debris causing gum inflammation.
Conversely, when flossing is done regularly and correctly, gums become healthier and stronger. Flossing helps remove plaque between teeth that toothbrushes cannot reach, preventing more severe gingivitis.
The Role of Knowledge and Attitude in Flossing Habits
A study by FKG UGM student Adventya Pinkan Christiana, supervised by Dr. Leny Pratiwi Arie S, S.Kp.G., MDSc., and drg. Iffah Mardhiyah, M. Biomed., titled The Relationship between Knowledge and Attitudes about Dental Floss and Flossing Practices among Health Cluster Students at Universitas Gadjah Mada, highlighted the importance of knowledge and attitude in shaping flossing habits.
Students with good knowledge and attitudes toward dental floss were more likely to floss regularly and correctly. This finding emphasizes that proper education and understanding can prevent mistakes in flossing that may cause gum bleeding. Moreover, knowledge helps individuals recognize that flossing should be part of daily oral hygiene, not just an occasional practice.
Tips for Flossing without Bleeding
For those starting flossing while minimizing gum bleeding risk, dentists recommend the following tips:
- Use soft, shred-resistant floss.
- Insert floss gently between teethwithout snapping it onto the gums.
- Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and move it up and down gently.
- Floss daily, not just when food is stuck.
With consistency, your gums will become stronger and bleeding during flossing will no longer occur.
***
Flossing does not automatically cause gum bleeding. On the contrary, when done correctly and regularly, flossing helps prevent gingivitis and maintain overall oral health. Proper flossing behavior is strongly influenced by knowledge and attitude, making education a key factor in developing this healthy habit.
