Annual Symposium FKG UGM 2024: Utilization of AI in Dentistry

In 2024, artificial intelligence (AI) technology has become a popular topic among the public, especially in urban areas. AI technology itself is not new. It began with the Logic Theorist program presented at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence conference in 1956. It continued with extraordinary developments spurred by the expansion of algorithmic tools and financial backing. Today, AI technology is widely used in various fields, from art and creativity to operating applications on everyday devices.

AI usage is highly highlighted because, despite its many benefits, there are concerns, including the worry that this technology will become a substitute for humans. In the field of dentistry, the use of AI also invites controversy. Nonetheless, the fact remains that AI technology has been extensively involved in preventive, curative, and rehabilitative dentistry, such as inpatient appointment scheduling, diagnosis, disease detection, virtual craniofacial model creation, and CAD/CAM systems in prosthodontics.

As part of its 76th Anniversary series, FKG UGM held the Annual Symposium: Utilizing Digital Dentistry to Navigate Society 5.0, inviting various experts as speakers in the scientific seminar. One of the panel lectures on AI technology was held on Friday (26/ 04). This panel lecture presented two main topics: "AI and AR-based Preventive Dentistry" by Dr. Eng. Igi Ardiyanto, S.T., M.Eng and "Biomedical Review of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Future Paradigm of Regenerative Dentistry" by Prof. Drg. Ika Dewi Ana, M.Kes., Ph.D.

In his panel lecture, Dr. Igi Ardiyanto, who is also a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Informatics Engineering at FT UGM, discussed the application of AI technology in digital dentistry, AI technology challenges, current uses and prospects of AI technology, and the advantages and disadvantages of AI technology. He also explained augmented reality (AR) technology and its applications and uses in dentistry.

The use of AI technology in dentistry, which has been controversial, was also mentioned by the Dean of FKG UGM, Prof. Drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D., in his remarks. "Artificial intelligence technology is very intriguing. On one hand, if we can utilize it well, AI can be a beneficial tool. On the other hand, there is potential for AI technology misuse," he explained.

Ultimately, the advancement of technology cannot be stopped, so strategic steps are needed to address AI technology. In line with this, Prof. Drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D., emphasized, "Let us be open to the development of AI technology. The challenge now is how this technology can be used to support academic and clinical activities because, essentially, this is the technology created for the prosperity of humanity."

Through this seminar, FKG UGM once again proves its commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) program. AI technology can potentially accelerate the achievement of SDGs, particularly in pillars 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and 17 (Partnership for the Goals). Collaboration between health and technology experts to utilize AI technology in dentistry can help accelerate efforts to improve the health status of oral and dental health in the community.
