Academics from Faculty of Dentistry UGM Attend Global Oral Cancer Forum in Malaysia

Dr. Drg. Dewi Agustina, MDSc from the Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), attended as a Special VIP Guest at “The 2nd Global Oral Cancer Forum” held on 25-26 May 2024, at The Connexion Conference & Event Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This international forum aims to raise awareness and build global partnerships in addressing various issues related to oral cancer and Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMD). Discussions covered disease burden and trends, prevention, the role of Human Papilloma Virus and Candida, screening, early detection, management, prognosis, as well as challenges and opportunities in cancer research.

During the forum, Dr. Dewi Agustina engaged in communication with speakers such as Prof. Saman Warnakulasuriya from King’s College London, Prof. Alexander Ross Kerr from New York University, and Prof. drg. Rahmi Amtha, MDS., Sp.PM., Ph.D. from Universitas Trisakti, Jakarta. These discussions resulted in collaborations in various aspects of the Tridharma of Higher Education, such as teaching, research, and postgraduate student supervision.

One of the significant outcomes of this meeting was the plan to establish a “National Registry of Oral Cancer” in Indonesia. This idea emerged after Prof. Rahmi Amtha highlighted that Indonesia does not yet have a national registry for oral cancer. Dr. Dewi Agustina will follow up on this discussion to initiate multi-center research, in cooperation with the Indonesian Ministry of Health.

Additionally, Dr. Dewi Agustina will discuss with Prof. WM Tilakaratne from the University of Malaya to explore opportunities for collaborative research between FKG UGM and the University of Malaya in the field of oral cancer.

FKG UGM’s participation in this global forum underscores the institution's commitment to combating oral cancer, in line with global efforts to achieve SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal.
