Mens sana in corpore sano-a healthy mind in a healthy body. This Latin phrase is widely recognized, and its meaning is well understood by many. However, some people are still unfamiliar with the idea that a healthy body includes healthy teeth and gums.
Universitas Gadjah Mada, a People's Campus upholding the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, participated in World Oral Health Day (WOHD) 2024. In line with the overarching theme of the 2024 World Oral Health Day campaign by the FDI World Dental Federation, "A Happy Mouth is a Happy Body," the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada collaborated with Unilever and RSGM Prof. Soedomo to hold a community service event titled "Healthy Teeth, Creating Smile That Shines."
The series began with educational activities on how to brush and care for dental health as well as free dental checkup which was held a month ago. Then came the Peak Event of WOHD 2024 which was held at Sleman Local Government Field on Sunday (28/04). This activity includes joint gymnastics, free dental examinations for the community around the field, toothbrushing with students, and the provision of TAF (Topical Fluorine Application) to 60 students from 3 schools where Saturday's dental examination activities were held, namely SDIT Bakti Insani, SDIT Ash-Shiddiq, and KB/RA Baiturrohmah Drono.
"Let’s always maintain our dental and oral health to keep smiling because a smile is the easiest charity. It costs nothing," said Dean of FKG UGM Prof. Drg. Suryono, S.H., M.M., Ph.D., in his speech at the event's opening. He also appreciated and hoped the event would benefit the participating community. "Thank you for your participation. Stay healthy and happy," he concluded.
This event was successfully carried out with the involvement of various components from FKG UGM, including undergraduate students, dental residents, lecturers, and educational staff. Drg. Yosaphat Bayu Rosanto, Sp. BMM, Head of the Community Service Unit at FKG UGM, thanked those who participated in the event. "Events like this will continue to be held by FKG UGM as a form of community care. This event is expected to increase public awareness of the importance of maintaining dental and oral health," he said.
Community Service activities such as this are a form of implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education while supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially pillar 3, Good Health and Well-Being. FKG UGM is present in the community to contribute to improving health status and quality of life as part of ongoing efforts to achieve a Healthy Indonesia.
