Main Priorities of Basic Dental Care for the Elderly

Prof. Sheng-Wei Feng from Taipei Medical University delivered a guest lecture at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada on 21 August 2025. The lecture discussed the elderly population in Taiwan, highlighting that more than 20% of the population is aged 65 years and older, with projections indicating 40% by 2070. He emphasized the importance of basic dental therapy, such as caries and periodontal care, which cannot be replaced by implants, especially for the elderly. Prof. Sheng also addressed complications of dental implants, noting that although implants have a high initial success rate, long-term issues may arise, and basic care remains essential for maintaining oral health. He concluded by advocating a return to fundamental dental procedures, including removable prosthetics, as they are safe, widely accepted, and cost-effective.

Challenges in Digital Fabrication of Removable Partial Dentures (RPDs)

This session discussed the integration of digital technology in the fabrication of removable partial dentures, stressing the importance of traditional impressions despite advances in digital scanning. It was noted that while digital scanning offers greater accuracy for single teeth or small arches, full-arch impressions still require conventional methods due to current digital limitations. The discussion highlighted the benefits of 3D printing for frameworks, particularly bridges, and the challenges in achieving precise fit and comfort with digital RPDs, which still rely on traditional principles. The use of autocast impressions was recommended to simulate selective pressure techniques, ensuring better outcomes and patient satisfaction.
