Gingivitis is one of the most common periodontal problems, marked by gingival inflammation caused by microbial plaque accumulation. Optimal gingivitis control often requires safe and effective interventions, one of which is the use of herbal mouthwash. Herbal formulations have the potential to provide benefits without causing serious side effects, serving as a natural alternative for maintaining gum health.
A study conducted by FKG UGM student Indah Riani Putri, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Regina T.C. Tandelilin, MSc. and Dr. Alma L. Jonarta, MKes. , explored the use of natural ingredients as mouthwash. The research, titled “The Effect of Rinsing with Avocado Leaf Extract Solution (Persea americana Mill) at 5% Compared to 10% Concentration on Gingival Mucosa Epithelium Maturation in Patients with Moderate Gingivitis”, was published in the Universitas Gadjah Mada Repository. The findings showed that avocado leaf extract solutions at specific concentrations could influence healing and repair processes in gingival mucosa affected by gingivitis.
With respect to gingivitis parameters, the study revealed that herbal formulations, in this case avocado leaf extract, could affect clinical indicators such as inflammation and gum bleeding. This confirms that herbal mouthwash not only functions as a cleansing agent but also has the potential to accelerate healing of gingival inflammation.
The advantages of using herbal mouthwash, based on this study, include positive effects in improving gingival health and its potential as a safer natural alternative compared to harsher chemical products. Avocado leaf extract solution as a mouthwash has been shown to produce beneficial effects on gingivitis parameters, such as reducing bleeding and inflammation of the gums.
In conclusion, herbal mouthwashes like avocado leaf extract solution show promising potential in improving gingivitis parameters. This study supports natural therapy options as part of gingivitis prevention and management, particularly for patients with moderate cases. Broader and more comprehensive research is needed to confirm the long-term effectiveness of herbal mouthwashes in clinical practice.
