Japanese Orthodontics Expert Gives Guest Lecture at UGM Faculty of Dentistry

An orthodontics expert from Tokushima University, Japan, Prof. Eiji Tanaka, delivered a guest lecture on the basic knowledge of temporomandibular joint disorders needed in orthodontic practice at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Thursday (31/7/2025).

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. Located right in front of the ears, it plays a vital role when we speak, chew, or yawn. When this joint experiences problems such as pain, a “clicking” sound, or even difficulty in opening, the condition is called Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD). This disorder can be caused by many factors, including misaligned teeth, which is a primary focus of orthodontic specialists.

Prof. Eiji Tanaka emphasized that modern orthodontic treatment should not only focus on aligning teeth for aesthetic purposes. According to him, the true success of treatment lies in the harmonization of teeth, muscles, and jaw joint function. “The success of orthodontic treatment and patient comfort greatly depend on the health of the TMJ. If this joint is ignored, problems may arise during or even after braces are removed,” explained Prof. Tanaka.

To ensure the residents truly understood, the activity was not limited to theory. Prof. Tanaka also conducted a direct patient examination demonstration, showing how to practically detect TMD problems in the clinic.

The Head of the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry UGM, Dr. drg. Cendrawasih AF., M.Kes., Sp.Ort., Subsp.DDTK(K), expressed hope that residents would become more competent orthodontists and be able to view patients’ oral health problems comprehensively. “Through discussions and direct clinical demonstrations, I hope this activity can provide participants with comprehensive practical understanding,” she concluded.
