The Indonesian Olympiad of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (IODR) is a prestigious national competition designed for Bachelor in Dentistry and dentist profession education students across Indonesia, focusing on the field of dentomaxillofacial radiology. The event provides an outstanding opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge and skills in the application of radiology in dentistry, particularly in diagnosing jaw and maxillofacial-related conditions. IODR also serves as a platform platform for competition, learning from experts, and advancing professional and scientific development in dental radiology.
IODR is always held as an integral part of the main event National Symposium of the Indonesian Association of Dental Radiology (IKARGI). In 2025, Surabaya hosted this biennial event. The competition added a competitive and engaging dimension to the symposium, highlighting the vital role of radiology in dental practice and encouraging students to stay updated with the latest advancements in the field.
The semifinalists of IODR 2025 who passed the preliminary round were invited to compete onsite in Surabaya, as part of the 12th IKARGI National Symposium. The winning teams were honored at the symposium’s gala dinner, celebrating their achievements. Beyond competition, the event fostered networking and collaboration among future leaders in dentomaxillofacial radiology. networking dan kolaborasi di antara para calon pemimpin di bidang radiologi dentomaksilofasial.
At SIMNAS IKARGI XII, Dr. Silviana Farrah Diba, Sp.RKG(K), lecturer at the Department of Dental Radiology, FKG UGM, won 1st Place in the Case Report category. To participate case report scientific award , contestants were required to submit a full paper. “After submitting, I waited for the announcement. I was named one of three finalists and proceeded to the judging process via Zoom, where I presented my poster and answered questions from the judges,” explained Dr. Farrah.
The Scientific Award is one of the symposium’s key events, recognizing excellence in academic work across three categories: case report, original research, and review. Dr. Farrah’s case report, presented the radiographic features of a compound odontoma lesion visualized in 3D using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). In preparing the full paper dari naskah case report , she was supported by Dr. Rini Widyaningrum, M.Biotech and Drg. Aufa Lufhg Ambar Verisandri.
“The unique challenge of this competition was to present a case report in dental radiology from a different perspective. Typically, case reports focus on radiographic images of a disease. This time, we highlighted the advantages of CBCT software in visualizing abnormalities,” she added.
FKG UGM has consistently supported SIMNAS IKARGI, both through faculty and student participation. Students regularly compete in IODR (Indonesian Olympiad of Dentomaxillaofacial Radiology) and achieve remarkable results year after year, while lecturers from the Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology actively contribute to scientific awards, seminars, and hands-on workshops.
Meanwhile, Dr. Rini Widyaningrum, M.Biotech presented her research on using AI to detect periodontitis in panoramic radiographs. “This idea came from the research roadmap of our department. It builds upon my previous studies and also served as my final project for specialist training at Universitas Airlangga,” she explained.
The research, conducted throughout 2024, aimed to refine earlier findings. Although Dr. Rini was the principal investigator, the project was a cross-disciplinary collaboration involving two universities (UGM and Universitas Airlangga) and AI engineers from Neura Integrasi Solusi (Neurabot).
