Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program Conducts Learning Evaluation and Curriculum Restructuring

Behind every competent graduate lies an educational system that is constantly evaluated and refined. In specialist dental education, curriculum structure and the accuracy of assessment methods must adhere to established standards. This is what drives the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program of FKG UGM to continuously conduct academic reflection and curriculum restructuring.

The Universitas Gadjah Mada Faculty of Dentistry (FKG UGM), through its Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program (KGA), organized the Workshop on OBE Curriculum Learning Evaluation Phase II, Curriculum Restructuring, and Clinical Instrumentation for Learning Assessment on Saturday, 14 June 2025.

This activity is part of ongoing efforts to refine the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum that has been implemented since 2021. The evaluation ensures that Learning Outcomes (CPLs), teaching processes, and assessment methods align with competency demands and the evolving needs of pediatric dental health services.

In the first session, drg. Fimma Naritasari, MDSc. highlighted the importance of revising curriculum content, particularly in restructuring CPLs/CPMKs and strengthening clinical assessment instrumentsShe emphasized that effective assessments should not only measure cognitive aspects but also authentically and comprehensively evaluate practical skills.

“Restructuring CPL and CPMK is necessary so that learning is not merely theoretical but truly reflects the competency requirements in practice,” said Fimma. “Clinical assessment instruments must be capable of capturing students’ abilities in an authentic and objective way.”

In the following session, dr. Dyah Listyarifah, MSc., D.Med.Sci. presented the need for revitalizing academic services and implementing systematic monitoring and evaluation . She stressed that high-quality education should create a supportive learning atmosphere while enhancing student engagement in the learning process.

Revitalization, she explained, is about building productive lecturer-student relationships, facilitating effective mentoring, and creating a conducive learning environment. “Through monitoring and evaluation, we can identify problems and design strategies for improvement. This is part of our responsibility to ensure quality and accountability in education,” Dyah added.

The day’s program included material presentations, panel discussions, and collaborative drafting of curriculum restructuring concepts by the teaching team. The process aimed to produce outputs that could later be implemented.

According to drg. Anrizandy Narwidina, MDSc., Sp.KGA., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, the outputs from this activity include a revised Academic Handbook, adjustments in course credits, updated RPKPS (lesson plans), and follow-up plans covering aspects of learning development, academic innovation, and clinical assessment tools.

The event was attended by lecturers, active students, alumni, and specialist education stakeholders. Through this initiative, the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program reaffirmed its commitment to improving education quality, ensuring curriculum sustainability, and producing graduates who meet national standards and societal needs.
