Maintaining Mental Health Through a Spiritual Approach

In recent years, the topic of mental health has gained increasing attention. Unfortunately, stigma against people with mental health disorders in Indonesia remains strong and is often underestimated. Many still believe that such conditions are not illnesses, but rather signs of ingratitude.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is a state of emotional, psychological, and social well-being that enables individuals to realize their potential, cope with life’s stresses, work productively, and contribute to their communities. Conversely, poor mental health can severely impact daily functioning, social relationships, and even physical health.

Data from the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) reported that more than 19 million Indonesians over the age of 15 suffer from emotional mental disorders, with around 12 million of them diagnosed with depression.

In a Friday sermon (16/5) at Al-Ikhsan Prayer Room, Ahmad Muttaqin highlighted the negative impact of social media, which can trigger psychological issues such as feelings of being left behind by others’ achievements or the pressure to match certain lifestyles. From a religious perspective, these conditions can be mitigated through values such as contentment, positive thinking, and maintaining a pure mind.

He emphasized that a spiritual approach is vital in healing and maintaining mental health. For believers, the best solutions do not come solely from medical approaches, but also from integrating spirituality. “We are God’s creation. Therefore, when our inner state is troubled, we must return to Him,” he explained.

In daily life, a spiritual approach can be practiced through several simple but impactful steps. According to Ahmad Muttaqin, there are at least four ways to maintain mental health:

Taking a break from routines – Slowing down from daily activities gives the mind space to breathe. In religion, this can be done through worship, contemplation, or solitude for introspection.

Remembering God – This brings peace to the heart and mind, fostering the awareness that we are not alone in facing life’s challenges.

Practicing gratitude – Focusing on what we have rather than what we lack nurtures a sense of sufficiency and reduces feelings of envy or inferiority. In faith, gratitude is also believed to bring blessings.

Surrendering to God’s will – Accepting outcomes after making efforts fosters resilience, including in facing failures. Through tawakal (trust in God), mental burdens become lighter as we acknowledge a greater power beyond ourselves.

In conclusion, mental health requires comprehensive attention, including spiritual aspects. By combining medical treatment with spiritual values, it is hoped that individuals can maintain and improve their overall quality of life.
