The implementation of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly smart building technology is now attracting the attention of many educational institutions, including international ones. This motivated the Timor Leste Agencia de Desenvolvimento Nacional to conduct a study visit to the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, on Friday (9/5) to learn directly about the smart & green building concept applied in the Dental Learning Center (DLC) building.
During the visit, 12 participants were guided to tour several areas of the DLC building, which has been operational for research and lectures since 2022. The green building concept green buildings aims to create buildings that are energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and comfortable for users—a focus of many educational institutions, including FKG UGM.
Buana Yaksa Surya Atmaja, S.T., M.Eng., Coordinator of Facilities and Infrastructure at FKG UGM, showed the participants various spaces, including a laboratory designed with energy efficiency in mind. “In addition to natural lighting, we also installed several sensors such as CO2 sensors, automatic AC panels, and two types of light sensors: motion sensors and light sensors,” explained Buana. He added that motion sensors, like Passive Infrared Sensors (PIR), activate the lights when detecting heat pattern changes caused by human movement.
Fidelis, one of the participants, expressed great admiration for the landscaping and facilities at the DLC FKG UGM. “Several campus development projects are currently underway in Timor Leste. We wanted to learn about green buildingsconcepts, and this building provides tremendous inspiration,” he said.
He also noted that the lush surroundings and open green spaces make the building not only functional but also supportive of a comfortable teaching and learning environment.
