Gum inflammation, or gingivitis, is a common dental health issue among teenagers. This condition is characterized by inflammation of the gum tissue and can cause symptoms such as redness, swelling, and bleeding while brushing teeth. It is important for teenagers to understand how to prevent and treat gingivitis to maintain optimal oral health. Here are several effective strategies to address this issue:
Proper oral hygiene
One of the best ways to prevent gingivitis is by maintaining good oral hygiene. Brushing teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily is highly recommended. Cleaning the hard-to-reach areas between teeth and along the gumline helps remove plaque, the primary cause of gingivitis.
Healthy Diet
A balanced diet plays a crucial role in gum health. Teenagers are encouraged to consume foods rich in vitamin C and calcium, such as fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Vitamin C helps repair inflamed gum tissue, while calcium strengthens teeth and bones.
Regular Dental Checkups
Routine visits to the dentist are essential in preventing and treating gum inflammation. Regular checkups help detect issues early and provide necessary treatment. Dentists can perform professional cleanings to remove plaque and tartar that cannot be eliminated through brushing alone.
Use of Herbal Extracts as a Supplement
A study found that rinsing with a 2.5% bird's nest extract solution can have a positive effect on gum health. Research conducted by FKG UGM student Eufrasia Claudia, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Drg. Regina TC. Tandelilin, M.Sc., and Prof. Dr. Drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes., Ph.D., on the maturation of gingival epithelium in patients with moderate gingivitis after rinsing with 2.5% bird's nest extract, showed that this natural ingredient helps accelerate the healing of inflamed gum tissue. Bird's nest extract is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce gingivitis symptoms.
Avoid Bad Habits
Reducing or avoiding bad habits such as smoking or excessive consumption of sugary drinks is crucial, as these can worsen dental and gum health. Additionally, staying well-hydrated by drinking sufficient water also supports oral health.
Self-Education
Oral health education is key in preventing gingivitis. Teenagers should be encouraged to understand the importance of dental care and the overall health impact of gum inflammation. Participating in oral health education programs at school or within the community can help raise awareness.
***
Gum inflammation is a common issue among teenagers, but it can be prevented and managed with the right steps. By maintaining oral hygiene, having regular dental check-ups, and considering the use of natural ingredients such as swiftlet nest extract, teenagers can significantly improve their dental and gum health. Education and self-awareness about the importance of dental care also play a crucial role in preventing this condition.
