How to Prevent Bad Breath from Certain Foods

Bad breath, or halitosis, is often caused by consuming certain foods such as garlic, onions, or other strong-smelling foods. To prevent bad breath triggered by these foods, you can apply the following steps:

Brush Teeth and Tongue Regularly

Brush your teeth at least twice a day, especially after consuming foods that can cause halitosis. In addition, clean your tongue using a tongue scraper or toothbrush to remove bacteria that may cause unpleasant odors.

Rinse with Mouthwash or Salt Water

Antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce bad breath by killing odor-causing bacteria. As a natural alternative, salt water can also be used to help eliminate bacteria in the mouth.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water helps keep the mouth moist and prevents dry mouth, which is often a cause of bad breath. Water also helps wash away food particles left on the teeth and gums.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum

Sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production, which plays a role in cleaning the mouth of food debris and bacteria. It also helps maintain a healthy pH balance in the mouth.

Avoid Foods That Cause Bad Breath

As much as possible, limit the consumption of foods with strong odors, such as garlic, durian, and high-fat foods. If consumed, immediately clean your mouth by rinsing or brushing your teeth.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

Visiting the dentist every six months can help detect and treat oral health problems that may contribute to bad breath.

The Link Between Knowledge of Halitosis and Oral Hygiene

A study conducted by student Nia Puspita Ningrum, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Drg. Regina TC. Tandelilin, M.Sc. and Budi Rodestawati, S.Kp.G, MPH., showed a significant relationship between knowledge of halitosis and oral hygiene behavior among students. The study found that the better a person’s understanding of halitosis, the better their oral hygiene practices.
