Effective Ways to Clean Orthodontic Appliances Without Damaging Their Structure

Regularly cleaning orthodontic appliances is essential for maintaining oral health and ensuring the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment. However, many people worry that improper cleaning methods might damage the structure of their appliances. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the correct way to clean orthodontic devices without causing harm.

How to Clean Orthodontic Appliances

According to research by drg. Darmawan Soetantyo, SU., Sp.Ort.(K), on the effectiveness of chlorhexidine disinfectant solution and betel leaf decoction against Streptococcus mutans, using the right cleaning solution can help reduce bacterial growth on removable orthodontic appliances. One of the most important steps is to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste when cleaning orthodontic appliances. Avoid whitening toothpaste or those containing abrasive particles, as they can scratch the surface of the appliance.

Additionally, using special cleaning trays or dentist-recommended cleaning solutions is highly beneficial. Soak the orthodontic appliance in the cleaning solution according to instructions, and always rinse it with clean water afterward. Periodically, clean the appliance thoroughly using warm water and mild soap to remove food debris and plaque buildup. However, avoid using hot water, as it can damage plastic components and alter the shape of the appliance.

Supporting Tools and Habits

Research by Dr. drg. Ananto Ali Alhasyimi, MDSc., Sp.Ort., on the relationship between orthodontic patients’ knowledge and oral hygiene behavior, highlights the importance of understanding how to use cleaning aids, such as floss threaders. These tools make it easier to clean hard-to-reach areas around wires and brackets, preventing food buildup and plaque accumulation, which can lead to oral health issues. Moreover, it is advisable to avoid sticky or hard foods, as they can damage the appliance and cause discomfort.

By consistently following these care guidelines, orthodontic appliance users can not only maintain oral hygiene but also ensure their devices remain in optimal condition for the best treatment results. This effort supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Promoting better oral health awareness; SDG 4: Quality Education – Ensuring patients receive adequate knowledge on orthodontic care; and SDG 10: Reduced Inequality – Encouraging equal access to orthodontic health information. With proper care and attention, dental health and orthodontic treatment success can be well maintained.
