On Wednesday, 18 October 2024, the Dental Unit Laboratory at Soetatmi Suryo Building was filled with third-semester Dental Hygiene students preparing for a practicum on oral cleanliness examination. This practicum is an essential part of their education, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which emphasize the importance of quality learning opportunities for all.
Students participated in the practicum in pairs, using dental unit chairs to conduct comprehensive intraoral examinations. This collaborative approach not only promotes teamwork but also enhances the learning experience, allowing students to learn from each other while applying theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
During the practicum, students compared the characteristics and clinical images of soft and hard deposits in the oral cavity. This exercise is crucial for understanding oral health, as it equips students with the skills needed to identify different types of debris, plaque, and calculus. By distinguishing these elements, students gain a deeper understanding of their implications for oral hygiene and patient care.
The importance of this practicum cannot be overstated. As future dental hygiene professionals, these students will play a vital role in promoting oral health in their communities. Mastering intraoral examination skills prepares them to educate patients on maintaining good oral hygiene and the potential consequences of neglecting it.
Beyond technical skills, the practicum also emphasizes the importance of documentation. Students were instructed to meticulously record their findings, which is a critical practice in dental hygiene. Accurate documentation not only aids in patient care but also contributes to ongoing research and education in oral health.
This practicum aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting access to quality healthcare and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by enhancing dental education. By training competent dental hygiene professionals, the program aims to improve access to quality oral healthcare services, ultimately benefiting the broader community.
The practical experience gained from this practicum is invaluable. It prepares students to face real-world challenges in dental hygiene, equipping them with the confidence and skills needed for successful careers. Integrating practical skills with theoretical knowledge is crucial for developing qualified professionals in this field.
Additionally, the collaborative nature of this practicum encourages students to engage in discussions about best practices and innovative approaches in oral healthcare. This exchange of ideas fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement, which is essential for advancing dental hygiene as a profession.
This practicum is a significant step in the education of future dental hygiene professionals. By emphasizing practical skills, teamwork, and documentation, the program not only enhances access to education but also prepares students to make a meaningful impact in the field of oral health.
