Gingival Examination in Dental Hygiene Practicum 1

On Wednesday, 27 September 2024, third-semester Dental Hygiene students participated in a practicum session focusing on gingival examination at the Dental Unit Lab, Soetatmi Suryo Building. This practicum aimed to enhance students’ skills in assessing gingival health, a crucial aspect of dental hygiene education. The session was supervised by experienced lecturers to ensure that students received proper guidance and support.

The practicum session began with an introduction to the importance of gingival health in overall oral hygiene. Students learned that healthy gums are essential in preventing periodontal diseases, which can lead to more severe health issues if left untreated. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

During the practicum, students paired up to perform gingival examinations on each other. This peer-to-peer approach fostered collaboration while allowing students to practice their skills in a supportive environment. Lecturers emphasized the importance of accurate assessment and documentation, which are vital components of effective dental hygiene practice.

As part of their learning outcomes, students demonstrated their ability to conduct thorough gingival examinations. They identified different gingival tissue structures and distinguished between healthy and diseased tissues. This hands-on experience was invaluable in developing the competencies required for their future careers as dental hygienists.

Students also learned to systematically document their findings, which is essential in dental hygiene practice. Proper documentation helps track patient progress and informs treatment plans. This practice reinforced the importance of maintaining detailed records, a key aspect of professional dental care.

Throughout the session, lecturers provided feedback and guidance, helping students refine their techniques and deepen their understanding of gingival health. This mentorship was crucial in creating a learning environment that encouraged growth and development, aligning with SDG 4’s emphasis on quality education.

The practicum session concluded with a group discussion where students shared their experiences and insights gained from the activity. This reflection helped them consolidate their learning and understand the real-world implications of their skills in promoting oral health.

Beyond enhancing technical skills, students also recognized the broader impact of their education on public health. By understanding gingival health, they were better equipped to educate patients and promote preventive care, contributing to overall community well-being.

The practical session at the Soetatmi Suryo Dental Unit Lab reflects the commitment to providing quality education in dental hygiene. With a focus on essential skills such as gingival examination, students are prepared to make a positive impact in their future careers, ultimately contributing to the achievement of the SDGs.

When students leave the lab, they carry with them not only the knowledge and skills gained during the practicum but also a renewed enthusiasm on their journey to becoming competent dental hygienists dedicated to improving oral health in their communities.

As the session concluded, students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to practice their skills in a real-world setting. They recognized the value of hands-on experience in strengthening their theoretical knowledge and preparing them for future careers as dental hygienists.

The Dental Unit Lab at Soetatmi Suryo Building continues to play a vital role in providing quality education and practicum for Dental Hygiene students. By integrating SDG principles into the curriculum, the institution is committed to nurturing a generation of healthcare professionals who are not only skilled but also socially responsible.

The gingival examination lab session is a significant step in the students’ educational journey. It equips them with essential skills while raising awareness of broader issues related to access to education and affordable healthcare. As they continue their studies, these aspiring dental hygienists will be better prepared to make a positive impact in their communities.
